Yeah, I should’ve been out hiking yesterday but instead I spent the afternoon gawking at the clever creations at Make Faire, where wacky do-it-yourselfers get their ya-yas out every year at the San Mateo County Fairgrounds. While there’s a smattering of annoying Burning Man types using sculpture to make political points you already know by heart, quite a bit of it is frolicsome and zany, and much of it is downright ingenious and practical, like this no-frills fold-down camper, called the Quickup.
Here’s a peek through the back door, and the view from the front. The table folds down and a 7-foot by 4.5-foot bed folds out. It has a little sink, stove and nook for a porta-potty.
I head the guy who made it bragging that it stood up to 80-mph winds. His site’s here (more pictures of how it works are there, too).
This blog post has much more on the designer, Jay Baldwin, who is quite the pioneer on things like this.
More of my Maker Faire pictures are here.
Nice pics! Can you cook much on that stove? Mmmm, maybe a tiny pot of beef stew.
Couldn’t bake a cake, I suspect, but could warm up some coffee.
I missed that camper. I was there Sat for almost 12 hrs! We tried to see everything, but of course we didn’t. I think it might be worth going at least once. Since my husband was an exhibitor “Western Combat Boat Club” he gave me 2 FREE passes (adults are $25 or $5 less if booked in advance online). FREE shuttle available from Caltrain & Franklin Templeton parking lot, otherwise $7 or $8.
I liked the Diet Coke/Mentos gysers
cupcake cars
fire art
Big wheel thingie
Food was overpriced..1 Yucatan tamale w/ side of lettuce for $7!
Ann: the camper was right outside the building near the entrance where I came in… if you came in from the parking lot, though, you might not’ve made it up that way.
The battleship wars were a hoot.. a bunch of boys of the perfect age — say 10 or 11 — were next to me hooting and hollering the whole way.
Looks rather interesting… but I think I will stick with the t@b trailer unless going into some serious remote area where you just cant possibly be toting a camp trailer around then something like this might fit the bill.
