Greg Wait has multiple irritations, probably the direct result of watching
\ntoo many local TV newscasts:<\/p>\n
\nOne phrase that always bothered me is, “Pouring down rain<\/strong>,” as in, “It was pouring down rain all week.” As opposed to
\nwhat? Molasses? Sprite?<\/li>\nA distinction of language that many journalists seem to miss is
\nthe difference between “less<\/strong>” and “fewer<\/strong>.”
\nMore and more the word “less” is being used in instances
\nwhere “fewer” is appropriate. The difference is simple —
\nif you want less traffic, you need fewer cars.<\/li>\nAnd please, would everyone stop “giving 110%<\/strong>?”
\nIt’s mathematically impossible, and you’re making the rest of us look
\nbad. 100% will be just fine.<\/li>\n“In conclusion<\/strong>,” don’t tell me you’re finished,
\njust stop talking or writing. I’ll figure it out. And no more “wrapping
\nit up<\/strong>,” as in, “That just about wraps it up<\/strong>.”
\nIf I hear that one more time, I’m going to drive down to the local
