Some words and phrases are blithely used in the local media without
\na second thought as to their sensibilities.<\/p>\n

  • Free gift:<\/strong> a gift is free by definition<\/li>\n
  • Pool of blood:<\/strong> as in “The man was lying in a pool of
    \nblood”.<\/li>\n
  • Action…. against:<\/strong> a catch-all term to mean punishment without
    \nsaying much. Sometimes the paper, radio or TV stations will proffer
    \nthe details but often won’t, leaving us to read between the lines.
    \neg “Action will be taken against Anwar Ibrahim.”<\/li>\n
  • Nabbed & transparency:<\/strong> as in detained, and public accountability
    \n_ the latter often used in govt.-speak to urge agencies or businesses
    \nto be more transparent.<\/li>\n
  • Percentages:<\/strong> often misused when percentage points up or down
    \nare meant. Telekom Malaysia’s pre-tax profit was down 12 percentage
