It&#8217;s a three-and-a-half-hour drive to the trailhead<br \/>\nat a place called Carr Lake, which is accessible by car only by driving four<br \/>\nmiles down a rutted, molar-grinding gravel road. <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/tommangan.net\/2006images\/06-17-06-tahoenatfrst\/IMG_2659.jpg\" width=\"402\" height=\"420\" border=\"1\"><\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s the road near Carr Lake. Rough as a cob, as my dad might&#8217;ve put it.<br \/>\nWe parked nearby and started looking around a bit after our teeth stopped rattling.\n<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/tommangan.net\/2006images\/06-17-06-tahoenatfrst\/IMG_2658.jpg\" width=\"273\" height=\"420\" border=\"1\">\n<\/p>\n<p>A snowmelt pond in the parking lot. There were at least a dozen cars here when<br \/>\nwe arrived; even more when we left. I&#8217;ve heard this area is the most popular<br \/>\nbut once you hike into the backcountry a bit, the crowds thin out. <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/tommangan.net\/2006images\/06-17-06-tahoenatfrst\/IMG_2676.jpg\" width=\"420\" height=\"288\" border=\"1\"><\/p>\n<p>Carr Lake, with a snow-covered ridge behind the far bank.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/tommangan.net\/2006images\/06-17-06-tahoenatfrst\/IMG_2684.jpg\" width=\"405\" height=\"420\" border=\"1\"><\/p>\n<p>The trail crosses a stream spilling out of the next lake over. Driest way to<br \/>\ncross is to pick your way through these rocks, as this family was doing. <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/tommangan.net\/2006images\/06-17-06-tahoenatfrst\/IMG_2682.jpg\" width=\"420\" height=\"315\" border=\"1\"><\/p>\n<p>A dam holds back the waters of Feely Lake.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/tommangan.net\/2006images\/06-17-06-tahoenatfrst\/IMG_2679.jpg\" width=\"398\" height=\"420\" border=\"1\">\n<\/p>\n<p>Fall Creek Mountain is the name of that hill. <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/tommangan.net\/2006images\/06-17-06-tahoenatfrst\/IMG_2680.jpg\" width=\"420\" height=\"234\" border=\"1\">\n<\/p>\n<p>More snow near the trail. <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/tommangan.net\/2006images\/06-17-06-tahoenatfrst\/IMG_2681.jpg\" width=\"420\" height=\"270\" border=\"1\">\n<\/p>\n<p>Yeah, it&#8217;s cold if you hold it in your hand. <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/tommangan.net\/2006images\/06-17-06-tahoenatfrst\/IMG_2675.jpg\" width=\"336\" height=\"420\" border=\"1\">\n<\/p>\n<p>One more look at Feely Lake. <\/p>\n<p>Melissa would like the world to know this was her first official California<br \/>\nhike. It was less than a mile but did include two stream crossings, one of which<br \/>\ninvolved taking off shoes and wading across and the other entailed tiptoeing<br \/>\nacross rocks and small boulders. You go, girl! <\/p>\n<p>Once we&#8217;d scoped out Carr Lake and gotten ourselves mentally prepared for the<br \/>\nbone-jarring ride back to the paved road, we decided to do a little sightseeing.<br \/>\nOur route took us up Interstate 80 to California Highway 89. We turned north<br \/>\nin search of Highway 49, which heads back south for about a hundred miles through<br \/>\nTahoe National Forest. The ride is stunning &#8212; we had the highway to ourselves<br \/>\nmost of the way. <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/tommangan.net\/2006images\/06-17-06-tahoenatfrst\/IMG_2690.jpg\" width=\"420\" height=\"283\" border=\"1\">\n<\/p>\n<p>That big scary rock formation is the Sierra Buttes, just north of a little<br \/>\ntown called Sierra City. <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/tommangan.net\/2006images\/06-17-06-tahoenatfrst\/IMG_2691.jpg\" width=\"420\" height=\"338\" border=\"1\">\n<\/p>\n<p>Snowmelt coming down the hillside. We pulled off to check out the buttes and<br \/>\nsaw this little waterfall. <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/tommangan.net\/2006images\/06-17-06-tahoenatfrst\/IMG_2696.jpg\" width=\"420\" height=\"225\" border=\"1\">\n<\/p>\n<p>HIghway 49 follows the Yuba River much of the way south. It&#8217;s cold, fast and<br \/>\nbumpy, great for whitewater rafting and kayaking. <\/p>\n<p>It took us a couple hours just to drive through this one stretch of Tahoe National<br \/>\nForest, and it&#8217;s one of about five such forests in the Tahoe area. The hiking<br \/>\nand camping alone are seemingly endless (many of the primitive campgrounds have<br \/>\nno fee, though if you want running water and flush toilets you can expect to<br \/>\npay a bit). <\/p>\n<p>The Tahoe region becomes mobbed with people during ski season because only<br \/>\na few roads can be kept open, and there are only so many outdoor things people<br \/>\nwant to do in 30-foot-deep snow. Once the snow melts, though, the crowds disperse<br \/>\nand the stuff-to-do factor goes way up. <\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m thinking I&#8217;ll be back this way more than once this summer. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This weekend is a bit of a preview of next weekend, when I&#8217;m doing an overnight hike in Tahoe National Forest.
