{"id":942,"date":"2005-04-25T17:49:49","date_gmt":"2005-04-25T22:49:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.tommangan.net\/?p=942"},"modified":"2011-05-18T20:33:07","modified_gmt":"2011-05-19T01:33:07","slug":"we-oughta-be-in-pictures","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tommangan.net\/index.php\/2005\/04\/25\/we-oughta-be-in-pictures\/","title":{"rendered":"We oughta be in pictures"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Got home last night; here are words and pictures from my five days of going to Hollywood, hanging around with a bunch of newspaper types, then heading back  home.<\/p>\n<p><b>Day One<\/b><\/p>\n<p>The point of this adventure is to attend the annual convention of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.copydesk.org\/\">American<br \/>\nCopy Editor Society<\/a> (ACES for short), which has chosen Hollywood in the<br \/>\nhope that some of its glamour will rub off on our ink-stained profession. <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/tommangan.net\/archives\/images\/2005\/04-25-05-tommygoestohollywood\/1.jpg\" width=\"420\" height=\"290\" border=\"1\">\n<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m riding along with Craig, sports editor at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mercurynews.com\/\">place<br \/>\nwhere I work<\/a>, who&#8217;s going to the convention to share tips on how to climb<br \/>\nthe corporate ladder and earn the rich rewards of twice the workload, four times<br \/>\nthe stress and and an extra $27.50 a week. <\/p>\n<p>In his haste to prepare his presentation notes, he fails to intuit my preference<br \/>\nfor a Lincoln Town Car for the 330-mile drive to Hollywood, and instead opts<br \/>\nto drive his Dodge pickup. I go along because it&#8217;s, well, either ride in the<br \/>\ncab with Craig or in the bed with the luggage, and it&#8217;s damn windy back there.<br \/>\nUpside is that Craig has brought along his awesome CD collection, so abundant<br \/>\ntunage makes up for lack of salon-length legroom. (Well, there is the small<br \/>\nmatter of a free ride all the way there and back because the paper&#8217;s covering<br \/>\nhis mileage tab, but this <i>is<\/i> California, where gratitude is strictly<br \/>\noptional.)<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/tommangan.net\/archives\/images\/2005\/04-25-05-tommygoestohollywood\/2.jpg\" width=\"420\" height=\"288\" border=\"1\">\n<\/p>\n<p>As a warm-up for Hollywood, we stop for lunch in the Santa Barbara wine country,<br \/>\nwhere the movie &quot;<a href=\"http:\/\/movies.yahoo.com\/shop?d=hv&amp;cf=info&amp;id=1808585439\">Sideways<\/a>&quot;<br \/>\nwas shot on location. <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/tommangan.net\/archives\/images\/2005\/04-25-05-tommygoestohollywood\/3.jpg\" width=\"420\" height=\"297\" border=\"1\"><\/p>\n<p>Lunch is in this Danish-themed village called <a href=\"http:\/\/www.solvangusa.com\/\">Solvang<\/a><br \/>\n&#8212; a location so impossibly cute that the producers of &quot;Sideways&quot;<br \/>\nwould&#8217;ve been obliged to create it if it hadn&#8217;t already been there. <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/tommangan.net\/archives\/images\/2005\/04-25-05-tommygoestohollywood\/3_1.jpg\" width=\"285\" height=\"420\" border=\"1\"><\/p>\n<p>This mannequin server guy is too disturbing to see up close. <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/tommangan.net\/archives\/images\/2005\/04-25-05-tommygoestohollywood\/5.jpg\" width=\"333\" height=\"400\" border=\"1\">\n<\/p>\n<p>Nice flowers &#8212; I guess they have those in Denmark for the three weeks of the<br \/>\nyear when it&#8217;s above freezing.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/tommangan.net\/archives\/images\/2005\/04-25-05-tommygoestohollywood\/6.jpg\" width=\"420\" height=\"205\" border=\"1\">\n<\/p>\n<p>The Hitching Post, where the protagonist of &quot;Sideways&quot; reveals the<br \/>\nmovie is not really about his love for wine, but his weakness for the bottle.\n<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/tommangan.net\/archives\/images\/2005\/04-25-05-tommygoestohollywood\/7.jpg\" width=\"420\" height=\"281\" border=\"1\">\n<\/p>\n<p>Back on the road &#8212; we&#8217;re in Ventura County, where there&#8217;s no escaping that<br \/>\nannoying &quot;Ventura Highway&quot; song from the &#8217;70s getting into one&#8217;s head<br \/>\nand not going away.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/tommangan.net\/archives\/images\/2005\/04-25-05-tommygoestohollywood\/8.jpg\" width=\"420\" height=\"298\" border=\"1\"><\/p>\n<p>Hollywood&#8217;s so close we can smell it. Or maybe a cow has died nearby. <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/tommangan.net\/archives\/images\/2005\/04-25-05-tommygoestohollywood\/9.jpg\" width=\"420\" height=\"301\" border=\"1\">\n<\/p>\n<p>Somebody thought it&#8217;d be clever for this little sign to mimic the more famous<br \/>\nbig one. An exciting career in newspaper page design awaits this deluded soul.\n<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/tommangan.net\/archives\/images\/2005\/04-25-05-tommygoestohollywood\/10.jpg\" width=\"418\" height=\"326\" border=\"1\">\n<\/p>\n<p>The famous sign is visible from my hotel room. That alone pretty much makes<br \/>\nthe trip worthwhile. Hollywood teaches us to value things other than money,<br \/>\nbecause we&#8217;ll be spending all we have to stay fed, keep in out of the weather<br \/>\nand still have some left over for the panhandlers and street hustlers.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/tommangan.net\/archives\/images\/2005\/04-25-05-tommygoestohollywood\/12.jpg\" width=\"293\" height=\"400\" border=\"1\"><\/p>\n<p>The hotel is standard business-conference fare, but it&#8217;s attached to a really,<br \/>\nreally appalling &quot;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.hollywoodandhighland.com\/home.html\">entertainment<br \/>\ncomplex<\/a>&quot; anchored by this entryway modeled on a set created for &quot;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.filmsite.org\/into.html\">Intolerance<\/a>,&quot;<br \/>\nthe classic silent movie created by cinema pioneer D.W. Griffith. <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/tommangan.net\/archives\/images\/2005\/04-25-05-tommygoestohollywood\/11.jpg\" width=\"202\" height=\"420\" border=\"1\">\n<\/p>\n<p>I was told these things are scale models of the &quot;Intolerance&quot; sets,<br \/>\nwhich were actually much larger. When time travel is invented, the first priority<br \/>\nwill be to revisit D.W. and beg him to reconsider. <\/p>\n<p><b>Day Two <\/b><\/p>\n<p>Eight hours that might&#8217;ve been constructively devoted to producing worthwhile<br \/>\nnewspapers, magazines and news Web sites has been consumed with eight hours<br \/>\nof <i>discussing<\/i> how to produce worthwhile newspapers, magazines and news<br \/>\nWeb sites. The joke is on us, though, because the seats in our offices are more<br \/>\ncomfortable than the seats the conference hotel has provided. Our response to<br \/>\nsuch absurdity is to consume absurd quantities of beverages characterized by<br \/>\nflavors of distilled grains, fermented grapes and brewed barley malt.  <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/tommangan.net\/archives\/images\/2005\/04-25-05-tommygoestohollywood\/13.jpg\" width=\"420\" height=\"298\" border=\"1\">\n<\/p>\n<p>Linda, a former copy chief of mine, reacts to an assertion of Mike, center,<br \/>\nwho&#8217;s primary role in life is encouraging young minds to enter the news business.<br \/>\nYes, he&#8217;s as crazy as he looks. Linda and I met Mike at last year&#8217;s ACES confab<br \/>\nin Houston, where the three of us (and a couple more brave souls) ran off to<a href=\"http:\/\/tommangan.net\/archives\/2004_03.html#002093\"><br \/>\nsee a stellar performance<\/a> by an incomparable surf-rock combo called <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scots.com\/\">Southern<br \/>\nCulture on the Skids<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/tommangan.net\/archives\/images\/2005\/04-25-05-tommygoestohollywood\/14.jpg\" width=\"420\" height=\"307\" border=\"1\">\n<\/p>\n<p>When I happened upon Mike he was next to his buddy Doug, another molder of<br \/>\ncollegiate minds. Mike suggested three guys with glasses would look like<br \/>\nRussian nesting dolls; I had Linda take this picture to test his theory. I think<br \/>\nit holds, except that those dolls look funny and we, from the looks of this snapshot, merely illustrate the fine line between the sublime and the ridiculous. <\/p>\n<p><b>Day Three<\/b><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/tommangan.net\/archives\/images\/2005\/04-25-05-tommygoestohollywood\/15.jpg\" width=\"420\" height=\"290\" border=\"1\">\n<\/p>\n<p>Today&#8217;s highlight is one of my favorite things in this world: a lunch somebody<br \/>\nelse is paying for. The locale is Mel&#8217;s Diner, which is decorated with images<br \/>\nfrom &quot;American Graffiti&quot; because another Mel&#8217;s location was used in<br \/>\nthe movie. <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/tommangan.net\/archives\/images\/2005\/04-25-05-tommygoestohollywood\/17.jpg\" width=\"420\" height=\"268\" border=\"1\">\n<\/p>\n<p>Brian, left, yet another former copy chief of mine, taking a break from answering<br \/>\nthe most burning question on the mind of Josh, my current copy chief, which<br \/>\nis: &quot;what the hell do I do about Mangan?&quot; To which Brian no doubt<br \/>\nanswered: &quot;Move to Kentucky.&quot; <\/p>\n<p>Tonight&#8217;s highlights are the banquet (cool, another meal I don&#8217;t have to pay<br \/>\nfor!) and the silent auction, in which curios are auctioned off to help defray<br \/>\nthe costs of providing meals at conferences like these. <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/tommangan.net\/archives\/images\/2005\/04-25-05-tommygoestohollywood\/18.jpg\" width=\"350\" height=\"295\" border=\"1\">\n<\/p>\n<p>This one depicts the earliest known act of copy editing. The guy on the right&#8217;s<br \/>\nsaying &quot;You Misspelled Thou.&quot;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/tommangan.net\/archives\/images\/2005\/04-25-05-tommygoestohollywood\/19.jpg\" width=\"420\" height=\"320\" border=\"1\">\n<\/p>\n<p>Nicole of <a href=\"http:\/\/nstockdale.blogspot.com\/\">Capital Idea<\/a> fame approves<br \/>\nof the beverage selection. <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/tommangan.net\/archives\/images\/2005\/04-25-05-tommygoestohollywood\/20.jpg\" width=\"360\" height=\"306\" border=\"1\">\n<\/p>\n<p>Courtney is ready for her close-up. She&#8217;s a former MercNews coconspirator who<br \/>\nnow runs the copy desk up in Contra Costa County. <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/tommangan.net\/archives\/images\/2005\/04-25-05-tommygoestohollywood\/21.jpg\" width=\"420\" height=\"310\" border=\"1\">\n<\/p>\n<p>Mary Ellen is the one who recognized me before I recognized her (detailed in<br \/>\nmy most recent posting). The guy with the flash bouncing off his head is Phil,<br \/>\nproprietor of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.testycopyeditors.org\/\">Testy Copy Editors<\/a><br \/>\nsite. <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/tommangan.net\/archives\/images\/2005\/04-25-05-tommygoestohollywood\/23.jpg\" width=\"260\" height=\"400\" border=\"1\">\n<\/p>\n<p>This sign was a hot item. <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/tommangan.net\/archives\/images\/2005\/04-25-05-tommygoestohollywood\/24.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"257\" border=\"1\">\n<\/p>\n<p>As the auction is about to expire, two competitors for the sign scribble their<br \/>\nbids madly. <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/tommangan.net\/archives\/images\/2005\/04-25-05-tommygoestohollywood\/25.jpg\" width=\"420\" height=\"318\" border=\"1\">\n<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/willcopy.blogspot.com\/\">Will <\/a>from Fresno, right, bought me a drink to say thanks for valuable career<br \/>\ntips like &quot;keep your head down till the shit stops flying.&#038;quot. Pete from Fort Wayne is the other guy.  <\/p>\n<p><b>Day Four<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Last day of the conference. My presentation titled &quot;Fitness for Rim Rats&quot;<br \/>\ndraws an audience of three, who clapped extra loud when I was finished. Thanks<br \/>\ngals; next time, call all your friends! <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/tommangan.net\/archives\/images\/2005\/04-25-05-tommygoestohollywood\/27.jpg\" width=\"420\" height=\"239\" border=\"1\">\n<\/p>\n<p>The post-conference bash is at a nightclub with a balcony looking down on Hollywood<br \/>\nBoulevard (the skyline of Los Angeles is in the background). Some us fled to<br \/>\nan old Hollywood restaurant a few blocks down the street, which was rumored<br \/>\nto be a celebrity hangout. One of our crew, a So-Cal denizen named Kate, told<br \/>\nof sitting next to Bob Dylan there. We saw nobody famous, though one bunch of<br \/>\nattractive twenty-somethings in a corner booth might&#8217;ve been professional understudies<br \/>\nwho haven&#8217;t worked since &quot;Melrose Place&quot; got canceled.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s Hollywood, everybody needs a story, right? <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/tommangan.net\/archives\/images\/2005\/04-25-05-tommygoestohollywood\/28.jpg\" width=\"420\" height=\"259\" border=\"1\">\n<\/p>\n<p>Peter from Tampa and Jim from Albuquerque help me close the hotel bar, which<br \/>\ntightened the taps at the insanely early hour of 12:30. I&#8217;m not saying how many<br \/>\ndrinks I had; all I&#8217;m sure of is there&#8217;s no way I could&#8217;ve spelled Albuquerque<br \/>\non the first try. <\/p>\n<p><b>Day Five<\/b><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/tommangan.net\/archives\/images\/2005\/04-25-05-tommygoestohollywood\/30.jpg\" width=\"420\" height=\"287\" border=\"1\">\n<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s Sunday morning, and I&#8217;m getting a few last photographs of nearby landmarks.<br \/>\nCertainly this town is hoping the revolution will be televised. <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/tommangan.net\/archives\/images\/2005\/04-25-05-tommygoestohollywood\/31.jpg\" width=\"324\" height=\"350\" border=\"1\">\n<\/p>\n<p>The world-famous Grauman&#8217;s Chinese Theatre is so big you have to photograph<br \/>\nit from across the street. <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/tommangan.net\/archives\/images\/2005\/04-25-05-tommygoestohollywood\/32.jpg\" width=\"302\" height=\"400\" border=\"1\">\n<\/p>\n<p>Back in the hotel lobby, I&#8217;m waiting for Craig to come down and take me home.<br \/>\nThe sunglasses help me hide from my public. <\/p>\n<p>Turns out Craig&#8217;s giving Nicole a ride to the airport, which is just down the<br \/>\nroad from Manhattan Beach. <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/tommangan.net\/archives\/images\/2005\/04-25-05-tommygoestohollywood\/33.jpg\" width=\"420\" height=\"259\" border=\"1\"><\/p>\n<p>Nicole&#8217;s seeing the Pacific for the first time. I believe her only regret was<br \/>\nthat it was hard to ogle the surfer guys when they were a hundred yards out<br \/>\nto sea. <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/tommangan.net\/archives\/images\/2005\/04-25-05-tommygoestohollywood\/34.jpg\" width=\"420\" height=\"297\" border=\"1\">\n<\/p>\n<p>Craig and I do strange hand salutes because we think it&#8217;s something cool surfer<br \/>\nguys might do. Nicole knows better but she takes the picture anyway, perhaps<br \/>\nhoping that photographic evidence might discourage such things in the future.\n<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/tommangan.net\/archives\/images\/2005\/04-25-05-tommygoestohollywood\/35.jpg\" width=\"261\" height=\"400\" border=\"1\">\n<\/p>\n<p>Look, it&#8217;s that wacky guy from the Jack in the Box ads, hanging out at his<br \/>\nbeach house! <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/tommangan.net\/archives\/images\/2005\/04-25-05-tommygoestohollywood\/36.jpg\" width=\"420\" height=\"306\" border=\"1\">\n<\/p>\n<p>OK, beach visit over, now it&#8217;s off to find some lunch. <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/tommangan.net\/archives\/images\/2005\/04-25-05-tommygoestohollywood\/37.jpg\" width=\"420\" height=\"312\" border=\"1\">\n<\/p>\n<p>Craig takes us to a little place in Torrance called Wahoo&#8217;s Fish Tacos. I&#8217;m<br \/>\ndown to my last six bucks but this place feeds me for four.
