{"id":959,"date":"2005-08-15T10:17:40","date_gmt":"2005-08-15T15:17:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.tommangan.net\/?p=959"},"modified":"2005-08-15T10:17:40","modified_gmt":"2005-08-15T15:17:40","slug":"a-jazz-saturday","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tommangan.net\/index.php\/2005\/08\/15\/a-jazz-saturday\/","title":{"rendered":"A jazz Saturday"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I had all day Saturday to kill so I dropped in on the San Jose Jazz Festival.<br \/>\nThere&#8217;s no admission to the fest, so to some extent you get what you pay for.<br \/>\nSo much attention goes into fundraising and cajoling bands to come to San Jose,<br \/>\nI suppose, that such things as program guides or maps of the festival are things<br \/>\nwhich you have to get along without. Well, if you&#8217;re too lazy and unmotivated<br \/>\nto ask somebody where such things might be found, which describes me to a T.<br \/>\nI had no idea, for instance, that there were at least three <i>indoor<\/i> venues<br \/>\nfeaturing interesting and wonderful jazz artists. Of course, sitting on the<br \/>\ncouch back home in my Friday edition of the San Jose Mercury News was a complete<br \/>\nguide to the festival with maps and arrows and advice on the must-see acts.<br \/>\nHeck, anybody can find cool stuff that way. <\/p>\n<p>So anyway, if you Googled San Jose Jazz Festival and happened upon this page,<br \/>\nbe assured it is not representative of the mind-boggling range of talent that<br \/>\nappears at the festival every year. It&#8217;s just some stuff I saw on a Saturday<br \/>\nin the summer of 2005. <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/tommangan.net\/archives\/images\/2005\/08-14-05-sanjosejazzfest\/IMG_4231.JPG\" width=\"420\" height=\"301\" border=\"1\">\n<\/p>\n<p>The first cool thing I saw was this cop on horseback riding his horse right<br \/>\ninto a tent where they were selling beer. He only jokingly ordered a draft from<br \/>\nthe tap. <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/tommangan.net\/archives\/images\/2005\/08-14-05-sanjosejazzfest\/IMG_4232.JPG\" width=\"328\" height=\"420\" border=\"1\">\n<\/p>\n<p>I wandered down to the blues stage, where Lara Price and her band were belting<br \/>\nit out. <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/tommangan.net\/archives\/images\/2005\/08-14-05-sanjosejazzfest\/IMG_4236.JPG\" width=\"420\" height=\"273\" border=\"1\">\n<\/p>\n<p>The Salsa Stage drew big crowds all afternoon. <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/tommangan.net\/archives\/images\/2005\/08-14-05-sanjosejazzfest\/IMG_4243.JPG\" width=\"420\" height=\"275\" border=\"1\">\n<\/p>\n<p>Vission Latina keeps the crowd grooving. I seem to recall the lead singer mentioning<br \/>\nhe was from Cuba. <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/tommangan.net\/archives\/images\/2005\/08-14-05-sanjosejazzfest\/IMG_4252.JPG\" width=\"420\" height=\"308\" border=\"1\">\n<\/p>\n<p>The crowd endorses the Salsa sound. <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/tommangan.net\/archives\/images\/2005\/08-14-05-sanjosejazzfest\/IMG_4270.JPG\" width=\"380\" height=\"316\" border=\"1\">\n<\/p>\n<p>Over at the Big Band Stage, a bunch of people who&#8217;s great-grandparents were<br \/>\ninto Benny Goodman keep the swing, well, swinging. <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/tommangan.net\/archives\/images\/2005\/08-14-05-sanjosejazzfest\/IMG_4284.JPG\" width=\"420\" height=\"187\" border=\"1\">\n<\/p>\n<p>Dancers with long hair often produced the coolest photos. <\/p>\n<p>I got these pix sitting on the sidewalk about eight feet from the stage, which<br \/>\nis one of the great things about checking out the less-popular venues: you can<br \/>\nalways sit up front and see the expressions on the faces of the performers as<br \/>\nthey perform. <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/tommangan.net\/archives\/images\/2005\/08-14-05-sanjosejazzfest\/IMG_4299.JPG\" width=\"420\" height=\"139\" border=\"1\">\n<\/p>\n<p>The Main Stage is roped off down at the front and you have to have a special<br \/>\nwristband to get in. I have no idea where to get the wristband, no motivation<br \/>\nto find out. The grounds nearby are full of people with blankets and lawnchairs<br \/>\n&#8230; it&#8217;s a nightmare to navigate so I end up avoiding the Main Stage. This is<br \/>\nSoul Live on stage; I&#8217;m sure I&#8217;d have loved &#8217;em if I could&#8217;ve gotten a seat<br \/>\nup front. <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/tommangan.net\/archives\/images\/2005\/08-14-05-sanjosejazzfest\/IMG_4306.JPG\" width=\"420\" height=\"333\" border=\"1\">\n<\/p>\n<p>Back at the Salsa Stage, Eric Rangel y su Orquestra America have taken the<br \/>\nstage. One of Eric&#8217;s bandmates was doing one of those silly things bandmates<br \/>\ndo because the lead singer is too busy singing to do what comes naturally, which<br \/>\nis to say, elbow him in the ribs or perhaps bop him in the jaw. He&#8217;s up there<br \/>\nsinging and one of his cohorts is behind him running his hands all over him<br \/>\nwith mock-homosexual ardor. It&#8217;s pretty funny until somebody takes a picture<br \/>\nof him doing it. <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/tommangan.net\/archives\/images\/2005\/08-14-05-sanjosejazzfest\/IMG_4316.JPG\" width=\"347\" height=\"380\" border=\"1\">\n<\/p>\n<p>Back to the blues stage. Graying white guy wearing strange shirt: this is perhaps<br \/>\nthe modern blues audience personified. <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/tommangan.net\/archives\/images\/2005\/08-14-05-sanjosejazzfest\/IMG_4321.JPG\" width=\"420\" height=\"260\" border=\"1\">\n<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s the De Azna Hotel down at the end of the street. It&#8217;s where I spent<br \/>\nmy first night in San Jose &#8212; quite a swanky joint, provided somebody else is<br \/>\npaying for your hotel room. <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/tommangan.net\/archives\/images\/2005\/08-14-05-sanjosejazzfest\/IMG_4323.JPG\" width=\"420\" height=\"311\" border=\"1\">\n<\/p>\n<p>More Salsa Stage grooviness. I don&#8217;t recall seeing a flute in a jazz band before.\n<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/tommangan.net\/archives\/images\/2005\/08-14-05-sanjosejazzfest\/IMG_4324.JPG\" width=\"380\" height=\"298\" border=\"1\">\n<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m not sure who these guys are, but they belt it out in Spanish with impressive<br \/>\ngusto. <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/tommangan.net\/archives\/images\/2005\/08-14-05-sanjosejazzfest\/IMG_4330.JPG\" width=\"291\" height=\"420\" border=\"1\">\n<\/p>\n<p>A man and his trombone at the Latin Stage. <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/tommangan.net\/archives\/images\/2005\/08-14-05-sanjosejazzfest\/IMG_4340.JPG\" width=\"420\" height=\"311\" border=\"1\">\n<\/p>\n<p>Back at the Big Band Stage, all the big bands had gone home but a Spanish\/gypsy\/mambo<br \/>\nflavored band called Alma Melodiosa got everybody moving for a segment called<br \/>\nJazz After Dark. <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/tommangan.net\/archives\/images\/2005\/08-14-05-sanjosejazzfest\/IMG_4348.JPG\" width=\"302\" height=\"420\" border=\"1\">\n<\/p>\n<p>Alma Melodiosa is a great combo with pleasing eye candy in the form of this<br \/>\nbackup singer who had these castanet-thingies draped over her nether regions,<br \/>\nproviding backing rhythms as she grinds out fetching belly-dancer moves. I sorta<br \/>\nfelt sorry for the lead singer, who had a powerful, haunting voice, because<br \/>\nobviously all the attention will be drawn to the gyrating babe to her left (who<br \/>\nwas a fine singer in her own right, but I don&#8217;t think many people were paying<br \/>\nattention to her voice. Well, a least not the guys). <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/tommangan.net\/archives\/images\/2005\/08-14-05-sanjosejazzfest\/IMG_4349.JPG\" width=\"380\" height=\"317\" border=\"1\">\n<\/p>\n<p>Low light, moving musicians and an unsteady photographer&#8217;s hand provide novel<br \/>\nvisual effects. <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/tommangan.net\/archives\/images\/2005\/08-14-05-sanjosejazzfest\/IMG_4361.JPG\" width=\"420\" height=\"248\" border=\"1\">\n<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m sure there was more to see but at this point I&#8217;m jazzed out. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I had all day Saturday to kill so I dropped in on the San Jose Jazz Festival.
