Sokehs Rock, or Paipalap, juts out and towers over the northern extreme of Sokehs Island. About five hundred feet from base to summit, the massive basalt formation is easily the most impressive natural formation on Pohnpei. Very similar also to Diamondhead. The profile resembles Yosemite’s signature landmark. However it is much much thinner. A rope has been strung along the route to the top to provide some support (mostly psychological).

Wikipedia has an interesting entry on the Micronesian state that governs the island. I had no luck finding int on Google Earth.
Pohnpei is in the cluster of Yap (known for their huge disk money – like 4 ft diameter coins – and Truk Lagoon (now called Chuuk, it’s original native name – known for the 70 ships and 200 aircraft the US sunk in Feb 1944 during Operation Hailstorm. This Japanese base was their “Pearl Harbor” – R&R and maintenance. The ships are now there for diving … all very deep – about 90′ to the tops. You can go inside and poke around. Losts of ammunition, sake bottles, tanks, planes etc. – but don’t take anything. All t his is southwest of Guam. Continental flies to these Micronesian Islands.
