{"id":2095,"date":"2008-10-07T07:52:31","date_gmt":"2008-10-07T15:52:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.tommangan.net\/twoheeldrive\/?p=2095"},"modified":"2008-10-07T07:56:38","modified_gmt":"2008-10-07T15:56:38","slug":"egads-summers-gone-and-what-did-i-accomplish","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tommangan.net\/twoheeldrive\/index.php\/2008\/10\/07\/egads-summers-gone-and-what-did-i-accomplish\/","title":{"rendered":"Egads, summer&#8217;s gone and what did I accomplish?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Cool hiking-related stuff I did in summers past: <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>2007:<\/strong> Tagged along on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/busybeingborn\/sets\/72157601659759332\/\">4WheelBob&#8217;s White Mountain conquest<\/a><\/li>\n<li><strong>2006: <\/strong> Vacationed at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tommangan.net\/index.php\/2006\/09\/23\/the-view-from-the-canyon-floor\/\">Zion<\/a>\/<a href=\"http:\/\/www.tommangan.net\/index.php\/2006\/09\/19\/the-coolest-place-in-southern-utah\/\">Bryce<\/a>\/<a href=\"http:\/\/www.tommangan.net\/index.php\/2006\/09\/18\/theres-such-a-thing-as-too-big\/\">Grand Canyon<\/a> in Southern Utah.\n<p>Went on overnighters to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tommangan.net\/twoheeldrive\/index.php\/category\/backpacking\/overnighters\/tahoe-national-forest\/\">Tahoe National Forest<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tommangan.net\/twoheeldrive\/index.php\/category\/backpacking\/overnighters\/emigrant-wilderness\/\">Emigrant Wilderness<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Took Steve Sergeant&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tommangan.net\/twoheeldrive\/index.php\/2006\/05\/01\/learning-to-be-light-the-outing\/\">lightweight backpacking course<\/a>. <\/li>\n<li><strong>2005:<\/strong> Vacationed at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/busybeingborn\/sets\/931047\/\">Yosemite.<\/a> <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I slept on an actual bed every every night in the summer of 2008 and barely got out of the Bay Area.   I had four weeks of vacation and couldn&#8217;t find time to squeeze in a single camp-out.  Upside: nobody had to pretend they were impressed with tales of my outdoor exploits. Didn&#8217;t have any. <\/p>\n<p>Lessons\/memories\/conclusions now that it&#8217;s all over:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Hearing the distant train whistle from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.roaringcamp.com\/\">Roaring Camp Railroads<\/a> from deep in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tommangan.net\/twoheeldrive\/index.php\/2008\/05\/12\/meadow-hiking-at-wilder-ranch-state-park\/\">eastern half of Wilder Ranch State Park<\/a> is just plain cool.   <\/li>\n<li>Also just plain cool: Walking through groves of essentially newborn redwoods already towering skyward at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tommangan.net\/twoheeldrive\/index.php\/2008\/07\/07\/pescadero-creek-county-park-revisited\/\">Pescadero Creek County Park.<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Making little movies of your hikes is not that hard &#8212; the video function on your digital camera and some video editing software is all you really need. String together a bunch of short clips, edit out the boring\/too-shaky parts and whammo: you&#8217;re in showbiz. <\/li>\n<li>If you find people you like hiking with, find a way to do it. Life keeps intervening on me and preventing this from happening. <\/li>\n<li>If you&#8217;re thinking, &#8220;by God I need to spend a week backpacking in the High Sierra,&#8221; find a way to commit yourself to doing it. I spent this year thinking maybe I&#8217;d get around to it and never did. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>What about the rest of you?
