Last week a couple hikers from Georgia urged me to check it out. Sage advice. <\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Note that two of Hanging Rock&#8217;s most noteworthy waterfalls &#8212; the Upper and Lower Cascades &#8212; require less than a mile of easy hiking, so they attract crowds (and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tommangan.net\/index.php\/2009\/09\/06\/gettin-hitched-at-hanging-rockgettin-hitched-at-hanging-rock\">occasional wedding<\/a>, as I found out yesterday). <\/p>\n<p>Hanging Rock is just 1.3 miles from the parking lot, but the hike requires over 500 feet of climb with a few fairly beastly sections. Here&#8217;s a look at the rock from a viewing platform in the parking lot. If you look real close you can see people up on the rocks (just hikers; rock climbing isn&#8217;t allowed in this section of the park.)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/busybeingborn\/3890924769\/\" title=\"Long view of the rock by busybeingborn, on Flickr\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/farm3.static.flickr.com\/2449\/3890924769_f84588083c.jpg\" width=\"500\" height=\"357\" alt=\"Long view of the rock\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I checked out Hanging Rock first, then did a loop along the Wolf Creek and Magnolia Springs trails, passed a small lake where folks can swim and rent watercraft, found my way to the Upper Cascade Falls to take a few pictures and called it a day. It&#8217;s uphill the whole way with few switchbacks. Starts out paved, then gets unpaved, then gets narrow, then gets very rocky as you near the top. It was a lot tougher than I expected. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/busybeingborn\/3891700986\/\" title=\"Tree and sky by busybeingborn, on Flickr\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/farm3.static.flickr.com\/2581\/3891700986_476b8f6fb9.jpg\" width=\"500\" height=\"371\" alt=\"Tree and sky\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Thankfully, an expired tree provided a photo opp along the way. <\/p>\n<p>So it goes up and up and up, then there&#8217;s a break in the trees and you look up and see &#8212; surprise! &#8212; these rocks hanging right over the trail. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/busybeingborn\/3890912493\/\" title=\"First sight of Hanging Rock by busybeingborn, on Flickr\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/farm3.static.flickr.com\/2475\/3890912493_c264a816bc.jpg\" width=\"500\" height=\"388\" alt=\"First sight of Hanging Rock\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s hard to visualize just how much the rocks jut out over the terrain below. Then their moms passed me.  I got to the top before their grandmothers showed up, fortunately. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/busybeingborn\/3891703932\/\" title=\"Rock and horizon by busybeingborn, on Flickr\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/farm3.static.flickr.com\/2507\/3891703932_b25f96d0d2.jpg\" width=\"500\" height=\"345\" alt=\"Rock and horizon\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>More rock, with farmland beyond. <\/p>\n<p>Like most Main Attractions, Hanging Rock gets crowded, but as with just about every other park, you have the rest of the trails to yourself, pretty much. I headed back down and took a left turn on the Wolf Rock Trail, which starts out narrow with the forest brushing at your elbows for the first half-mile or so. The trail itself is very narrow, even overgrown a bit in places, which creates a kind of intimacy with the forest that can be an unexpected pleasure if you&#8217;re not claustrophobic by nature. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/busybeingborn\/3891711468\/\" title=\"Forest colors by busybeingborn, on Flickr\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/farm3.static.flickr.com\/2529\/3891711468_bc00b830d3.jpg\" width=\"500\" height=\"361\" alt=\"Forest colors\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Some color along the way. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/busybeingborn\/3891713316\/\" title=\"Small lake for swimming, fishing, paddling, etc. by busybeingborn, on Flickr\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/farm3.static.flickr.com\/2502\/3891713316_986e4fda02.jpg\" width=\"500\" height=\"368\" alt=\"Small lake for swimming, fishing, paddling, etc.\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Eventually the trail parallels a small lake. There&#8217;s an open-air lodge where you can rent a boat or buy a Coke (just 50 cents!) or a snack. <\/p>\n<p>After that I checked out Upper Cascade Falls. Wouldn&#8217;t put Yosemite out of business or anything, but it&#8217;ll do. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/busybeingborn\/3890926777\/\" title=\"Upper Cascade Falls by busybeingborn, on Flickr\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/farm4.static.flickr.com\/3491\/3890926777_3fe5bfa06a.jpg\" width=\"335\" height=\"500\" alt=\"Upper Cascade Falls\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>So that&#8217;s a first look at Hanging Rock State Park. There looks to be about 20 miles of trails at the park, so there&#8217;s lots more exploring to be done there.
