{"id":4017,"date":"2010-02-21T19:39:31","date_gmt":"2010-02-22T03:39:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.tommangan.net\/twoheeldrive\/?p=4017"},"modified":"2010-02-21T19:39:31","modified_gmt":"2010-02-22T03:39:31","slug":"destinations-at-everytrail-com","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tommangan.net\/twoheeldrive\/index.php\/2010\/02\/21\/destinations-at-everytrail-com\/","title":{"rendered":"Destinations at EveryTrail.com"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The gang at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.everytrail.com\/\">EveryTrail.com<\/a> has a new feature for all us GPS geeks: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.everytrail.com\/guides\">Destinations<\/a> &#8212; which gather all the EveryTrail trips for a specific geographic region into a single page. <\/p>\n<p>The new stuff refines the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.everytrail.com\/guides\">Guides<\/a> project that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.trailspotting.com\/\">Trailspotting<\/a> and I contributed to &#8212; it subtracts much of the effort required to write a guide, adds social-networking features, appoints &#8220;Gurus&#8221; (whoever&#8217;s visited the destination most often) and lets users appoint themselves &#8220;rangers&#8221; to watch over the destinations, which other users can edit. <\/p>\n<p>Several Bay Area locales have active Destinations. A small sampling to give you an idea how it works: <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.everytrail.com\/destination\/henry-w-coe-state-park\">Henry Coe State Park. <\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.everytrail.com\/destination\/mount-madonna-county-park\">Mount Madonna County Park.<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.everytrail.com\/destination\/big-basin-redwoods-state-park\">Big Basin Redwoods State Park<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I created a couple local destinations: <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.everytrail.com\/destination\/hanging-rock-state-park\">Hanging Rock State Park. <\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.everytrail.com\/destination\/sauratown-trail\">Sauratown Trail.<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Just so we&#8217;re all clear:  I was paid for my contributions to the Guides section, but I didn&#8217;t get a dime for my Destinations. I added a few because it was quick and easy, hallmark of a handy Web resource. <\/p>\n<p>Incidentally, I learned last week that EveryTrail&#8217;s parent company <a href=\"http:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2009\/12\/29\/globalmotion-everytrail-funding\/\">scored a cool $1 million in venture capital funding<\/a> back in December, a sign that people with big bucks are starting to like what they see there (which has pluses and minuses, as the recent stock market crash reminds us). <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The gang at EveryTrail.com has a new feature for all us GPS geeks: Destinations &#8212; which gather all the EveryTrail trips for a specific geographic region into a single page.
