{"id":4836,"date":"2011-02-03T13:59:56","date_gmt":"2011-02-03T18:59:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.tommangan.net\/twoheeldrive\/?p=4836"},"modified":"2011-05-08T08:15:30","modified_gmt":"2011-05-08T13:15:30","slug":"tripadvisor-buys-everytrail","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tommangan.net\/twoheeldrive\/index.php\/2011\/02\/03\/tripadvisor-buys-everytrail\/","title":{"rendered":"TripAdvisor buys EveryTrail"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The only Silicon Valley CEO who answers my e-mails &#8212; Joost Schreve of EveryTrail.com &#8212; lobbed a minor bombshell in my in-box this morning with <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.everytrail.com\/?p=753\">news that he&#8217;d sold EveryTrail to TripAdvisor<\/a>,  a subsidiary of the travel giant Expedia.com.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.tommangan.net\/twoheeldrive\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/et-ta.gif\" alt=\"EveryTrail Trip Advisor merger logo\" title=\"EveryTrail Trip Advisor logo\" width=\"202\" height=\"83\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-4838\" \/>Getting acquired is every scrappy start-up&#8217;s dearest desire (see <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pobronson.com\/index_first_20_million.htm\">&#8220;The First $20 Million is Always the Hardest<\/a>&#8220;), so I was glad to be able to at least imagine immense riches for Joost and a few others I know at EveryTrail who busted hump building the company over the past couple years. Terms of the deal weren&#8217;t disclosed.<\/p>\n<p>So what did  TripAdvisor see in EveryTrail? After all, its <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tripadvisor.com\/MobileApps\">smartphone apps<\/a> are already GPS-enabled. While I wouldn&#8217;t delude myself to think my EveryTrail contributions had much to do with the deal, there&#8217;s no doubt EveryTrail&#8217;s focus on outdoor recreation helped get it done. TripAdvisor is all about flights, hotels, rentals and other civilized doings.
