Joined by blackflies, yellow jackets and no-see-ums, the populations peak in July and August and don&#8217;t drop much until the first frost. &#8220;They definitely all want to be out for Fourth of July and Labor Day,&#8221; Paull said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Excerpts from a list of anti-bug tips:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Avoid damp spots. <\/strong>&#8220;Generally any place with the words &#8216;meadow,&#8217; &#8216;lake&#8217; or &#8216;pond&#8217; in its name is sure to be buggy: Meander Meadows, Larch Lakes, Peggy&#8217;s Pond,&#8221; says Seattle hiker Kim Brown. &#8220;Multiply the bug factor by 10 if the noun is plural, or if it&#8217;s Dagger Lake.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><P><br \/>\n<strong>Follow the wind. <\/strong>Ridges or hilltops tend to be windy and away from water, two things that help discourage bugs. Be careful about camping there, however, in case of a thunderstorm.<br \/>\n<P><br \/>\n<strong>Wear light, neutral-colored clothing.<\/strong> Mosquitoes seem to favor dark colors, especially blue. Bees seem attracted to bright colors but not neutral ones.
