A hiker named 30-30, at mile 109.6 of the Pacific Crest Trail:

Cowboy camping was a bust again. The dew was so heavy that it looked like it had been drizzling all night. Unless I know that it will be dry I will retreat to my single wall abode in the future, safe from rain, mist, snow, bugs, bears & meteours. Packed up the sopping mess and headed for civilization. The treadway was far easier then before, running straight through rolling bovine pastures. No prickers but plenty of other soft smelly landmines courtesy of the California Cattlemen Assoc and their hard chewing future hamburger patties.

Sounds like there may be a dozen or so hikers already out in the desert heading north from Mexico. I have about a dozen Trail Journals bookmarked, and almost all are leaving in the next few days.
