The headline alone is reason enough to check this one out: N.Y. detective lost in Dismal Swamp is found

Lost in Dimsal Swamp? Rats, that was going to be the title of my memoirs. This part is great:

DiPaola went into the swamp at the Jericho Ditch Road entrance about noon, leaving his late-model Ford with New York tags in the parking lot.

At 11:30 Wednesday night, DiPaola made a cell phone call to emergency services that was picked up by the Chesapeake Police Department.

Talk about a guy’s guy: In the swamp six hours after sunset before he calls for directions. I wonder how many times he said to himself: “I’m a detective, dammit, I can find my way out of here.”

All snark aside, getting lost in a bog in January — and spending the night, no less — can be genuinely life-threatening, particularly if you’re unprepared. A good reason to have your Tacoma Mountain Rescue Survival Kit stowed in your pack. It’s heavy but it’ll keep the bog from killing you. Also, those little LED lights that go on a key ring can help rescuers find you in the dark. Just don’t run the battery down trying to get unlost.
