Newsday reports on getting in shape for summer hikes.

“Exercising in the great outdoors hardly feels like exercise at all,” says Ted “Cave Dog” Keiser of Portland, Ore., who has set numerous records for speed-hiking and last fall completed 50 hikes of 50 kilometers or more in 50 days. “It is like a small adventure in a way that a treadmill or a walk around the block in town could never achieve,” Keiser says. “I say, open your eyes, smell the fresh air and get a great inspiring workout all at the same time.”
