His Pacific Crest Trail adventure complete, Chuckie V. dispenses bits of wisdom.

  • Hike your own hike. Basic advice here. Anybody who tells you this more than once really means “Hike your own hike MY WAY.” Ignore them; they’re imbeciles.
  • Gear is gear. What works for you may not work for someone else, and vice-versa. Gear talk is overly prevalent for the first month or so on the trail and after that, you rarely hear it.
  • The best piece of gear you can carry on the PCT is the one between your ears.
  • Smiles, not miles! Stop, smell the flowers, and then gambol in them.
