Elias Butler of Flagstaff, Arizona, has co-authored this book about a guy who spent a lifetime exploring the nooks and crannies of the Grand Canyon (nooks-and-crannies capital of the known universe). He’ll give a hiking slide show at the REI in Mountain View at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 24. Elias sent me an e-mail with the following tidbit:

There is one chapter in particular that may be of special interest to Bay Area readers. Colin Fletcher, author of several backpacking books (and former Berkeley resident who died this year), completed a 2-month solo journey through Grand Canyon in 1963 that became the basis for his book “The Man Who Walked Through Time.” Fletcher had a prickly relationship with Butchart, who provided Fletcher with the route information he needed to get through Grand Canyon. The chapter on Fletcher discusses their relationship and also the effect Fletcher’s book had on both men.

Elias’ co-author is Tom Myers, co-author of the best-selling “Over the Edge: Death in Grand Canyon” (which had a well-regarded sequel called “Off the Wall: Death in Yosemite.”)

Sounds like an interesting outing for a Wednesday evening (I have to work weeknights so I’m never free for these things. Maybe one of y’all can go and report back).
