My next cottage gear maker profile will be ULA-Equipment, run by Brian Frankle of Logan Utah.

Henry Shires tells me he met Frankle on the Pacific Crest Trail, which they both through-hiked in 1999. (Hmm, wonder how many other PCT Class of ’99 hikers formed their own gear companies).

Frankle makes packs, primarily. A few years back, hikers could expect to wait months to get their packs because Frankle was doing much of the sewing himself. That appears to be less of an issue lately. Like Shires, he’s always coming up with new stuff. The latest is the OHM.

If you’ve got a ULA pack, I’d love to hear about it. Just leave a note in the comments.
