Tarantulas mating season may be the best reason to hit the trails this time of year, but it’s not the only one. There’s always the cherished possibility of getting caught in an autumnal downpour. For the heck of it I tracked down where I hiked in each of the past four Octobers.

2004

  • October 10: Joseph D. Grant County Park. This is where I learned not to to rest one’s hat on a trail marker covered in bird doo-doo. Got my first picture of a coyote on this one.

2005

  • October 23: Sunol Wilderness. Highlights: tarantula, calf close-ups.
  • October 30: Castle Rock State Park. Highlights: Old car axle, dangling climbers.

2006

  • October 1: Joseph D. Grant County Park. Highlights: FOMFOK gang puts in an appearance.
  • October 9: First (and only) International Outdoor Blogger Ho Down. As far as I know, everybody there still reads this blog. (Another Ho Down wrap-up here, for those interested in a stroll down memory lane).
  • October 15: Ohlone Wilderness Trail from Lake Del Valle. Highlights: Fall color, cool dead trees.
  • October 22: Skyline Ridge Open Space. Highlights: Winehiker Russ is my humble guide.
  • October 29: Pleasanton Ridge. Highlights: Olive groves, remote ponds, getting lost and found.

2007

  • October 7: Windy Hill Open Space Preserve. Highlights: Lost Trail is a great find.
  • October 14: Mount Madonna County Park. Highlights: Discovered way-cool Sprig Lake Trail.
  • October 21: Alum Rock Park in San Jose. Highlights: Great grottos (great thing about the Web: you can’t smell the rotten-egg stench).
  • October 28: Three Peaks, Mount Diablo State Park. Highlights: Hike Half Dome’s Rick Deutsch puts in an appearance; another tarantula close-up.
